Tennis and Pickleball Added to Rothwell Park

An upcoming addition to Rothwell Park could be the perfect match for Moberly.

Moberly’s Parks and Recreation Department will build tennis courts in the northeast section of the park. The projected site for construction has been empty for about six years after its skate park closed down.

Parks and Rec director Troy Bock said filling the space had been on the department’s agenda for a while, but their funding disallowed them from moving forward.

However, constructing the courts will now be a low-cost option for the department.

“The benefit of this location is rather than establishing new courts in terms of a new concrete slab,” Bock said. “This already has an existing concrete slab, [as well as] the fencing and the lighting. All we have to do is resurface and put in the posts and nets.”

Bock said he assumes the project will cost less than $34,000. Parks and Rec has also already received two $5,000 donations from both Moberly Friends of the Park and Impacting Youth Wellness.

Pickleball lines will also be painted on the court. Bock said this would be the first pickleball court in Moberly.

“It’s an up-and-coming sport in many communities nationwide,” Bock said. “It’s popular over a range of ages, but particularly seniors. And so we’re looking at it as one more use at these courts and certainly something for seniors in terms of recreation."

Bock said that the project would be completed by the middle of June.
