University of Missouri alumnus Mark McAndrew is donating $2.4 million to the oncology program at University Hospital. The money will help establish the Frances T. McAndrew Endowed chair in oncology, names after Mark McAndrew's late aunt who was a patient at Ellis Fischel.

"Frances always spoke highly of the of the top-notch care she received at the MU Ellis Fischel Cancer Center" McAndrew said. "I hope this gift will help continue to advance the premier research and care the MU health system provides."

The search to hire someone to fill that chair will begin soon. The University said they would like to attract a "superstar" level cancer researcher.

$400,000 from the donation will fund MU researcher Fred Hawthorne as he studies how to use nanoparticles to fight cancer.

Vice Chancellor of MU's Health Sciences Center Hal Williamson is optimistic the donation can help make Ellis Fischel one of the top cancer centers in the country.

"I would say right now we're a very good cancer center and my aspiration is for it to be great and gifts like this are what make that happen."

With this donation, the University of Missouri has now received over $165 million this year, the most in the school's history.
