A Missouri Senate committee has blocked one of Gov. Jay Nixon's nominees to serve on the University of Missouri Board of Curators.

The motion to endorse Cape Girardeau lawyer Michael Ponder failed Wednesday on a 5-5 vote.

Ponder was first tapped by Nixon for the post in January 2013. The Senate did not act on his nomination last year, but Nixon reappointed Ponder in June and he has been serving on the board since then.

Michael Ponder’s tenure with the University of Missouri Board of Curators is over — at least for now. Governor Jay Nixon appointed the Cape Girardeau attorney to the board last month before the start of the 2013 legislative session, but he still needed Senate confirmation for his appointment to become permanent.  Nixon formally reversed Ponder’s appointment Wednesday night when it became apparent that he would not win Senate confirmation by Thursday deadline.

Governor Jay Nixon has appointed former Missouri Supreme Court Judge Ann Covington to the University of Missouri Board of Curators. In a press release Thursday afternoon, Governor Nixon calls Covington - who lives in Columbia - a prominent leader in Missouri for the last 25 years.
