Students from the four universities in the UM System presented their research to legislators and spectators earlier Tuesday at the State Capitol as part of Undergraduate Research Day. The symposium featured posters of 46 students from MU, UMSL, UMKC, and Missouri S&T. Of the students presenting, 20 were MU sophomores, juniors or seniors.

Each year, around 200,000 college graduates earn teaching degrees in the U.S. But the National Council on Teacher Quality released a report Tuesday explaining that colleges and universities are not doing enough to properly train future teachers. NCTQ is a Washington-based group that believes in fundamental education reforms. Of the 34 Missouri institutions included in its study, none received the highest score of four stars.

It’s been dubbed the Interdisciplinary Intercampus Research Program and it has a starting fund of a million dollars. The new program’s goal is to promote research that has high potential for external funding and commercialization.

Mike Nichols is the UM system’s vice president for research and economic development. He says a successful collaboration by scientists at UMKC and engineers at Missouri S&T inspired the funding’s creation. The team developed a bioactive glass material that helps heal open wounds.

The University of Missouri and Missouri S&T entered a partnership with Westinghouse Electric Company to determine safety guidelines for small modular nuclear reactors.

This research supports a proposal from Westinghouse and Ameren Missouri that seeks $452 million in Department of Energy grants to build a small nuclear reactor near Fulton. The reactor could bring 400 jobs to mid-Missouri and would power 45,000 homes. Missouri has the potential to become a hub of small reactor manufacturing and distribution.
