Two top administrative vacancies at Columbia Public Schools are now filled for this fall. CPS announced Hickman High School Assistant Principal Tony Gragnani will move up to principal of that school, while Battle High School Assistant Principal Melita Walker will be the new principal at West Middle School.

Gragnani has served as an assistant principal at Hickman since 2014. He says the relationships he’s built during his time there will be important when taking on his new job.

West Middle School students may have a safer walk to school if a new crosswalk gets approved by city council. The Columbia Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission officially recommended a crosswalk on Broadway, in between Stadium Boulevard and Clinkscales Road, to the Columbia City Council yesterday. The project was brought to the Commission by a concerned resident who lives around the school. West Middle School Principal Dr. Connie Dewey says a crosswalk would benefit students, especially in the mornings.

In the coming weeks, KBIA will be reporting on what effect the addition of Battle High School and the restructuring of middle schools have had on Columbia Public Schools overall.

Gentry Middle School has more students than any other middle school in the Columbia Public School District.  You can see the exact enrollment numbers below:

There is about a half-mile stretch between Stadium Boulevard and Clinkscales Road in Columbia where Broadway has no sidewalk on its south side and no safe place to cross. At the monthly Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission meeting, Columbia resident Debbie Rodman explained why she thinks Broadway’s lack of sidewalks or safe crossing points is a safety hazard for students at West Middle School.
