UPDATE 5:00pm Thursday: Columbia Public Schools will be closed again on Friday due to weather and road conditions. Jefferson City Public Schools will be in session Friday, although busses will run on snow routes in Callaway County in the morning and afternoon.

UPDATE 5:00 p.m. Wednesday: University of Missouri officials announced that the Columbia campus will be open Thursday for all regularly scheduled operations.

So there’s a huge storm coming into Missouri tonight/tomorrow morning and the Weather Channel says you can blame California (sort of).

Officials are discouraging travel in southeastern Missouri until crews clear the roads from what was expected to be heavy snowfall with blizzard conditions.

The National Weather Service placed 13 counties from the Bootheel to north of Cape Girardeau under a blizzard warning from Tuesday night to midday today. Total accumulations were expected to range from three inches in the Bootheel to 12 inches farther north.

The Missouri Department of Transportation says it’s ready for the winter storm that’s supposed to hit the St. Louis area and portions of south central Missouri and the Ozarks over Christmas.

Columbia Public School district spokesperson Michelle Baumstark says three Columbia schools were experiencing sporadic power outages Thursday morning due to a winter storm in the area. Baumstark says the outages at New Haven elementary school, Parkade elementary school and West Junior High School started around 9:45am Thursday.
